To help units gather class prefences from the Scouts, we have made a fillable Merit Badge Selection Form that units can use the so Scouts can list their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice of classes for each period.

Before printing or emailing, on page 1, add the dates of summer camp at the top of the form and the date and who the form needs to be returned to at the bottom of the page.

Page 1 and 2 is for Scouts. Page 3 is for adults.

You can now add the names of Scouts and adults. We recommend adding names after you collect the selection forms and before April 1st.  You will need the information on these pages to complete registration.

How to Add Merit Badge Classes

To add merit badge classes, go to http://app.doubleknot.com/signon/2509. You must use the same login as you used to register for camp. Many people have more than one account in Doubleknot, so if you do not see summer camp, it's likely you registered using a different User ID. For more information about how to add merit badge classes, visit shac.org/registration-instruction#merit-badge. The unit leader who registered the unit has access to add the merit badge classes. We can add an additional adult to have access (please don't wait until late on March 31st or early on April 1st). To request additional access for adults, send the request to shac.org/dk.

You can now add the names of Scouts and adults into Doubleknot. You will need BSA ID numbers for the youth. Important! The Scout's first and last name as well as BSA ID number must match their full name listed in Scoutbook.

For Doubleknot support or to request additional access for adults, go to https://samhoustonbsa.doubleknot.com/survey/support/81705.

If you need to add Scouts and adults to your overall numbers, go to https://samhoustonbsa.doubleknot.com/survey/support/81705.

Partials and Completions

Attending a merit badge class does not guarantee that a Scout will complete the merit badge, but it is an opportunity for Scouts to meet with qualified instructors, to help them work on the requirements needed to complete a merit badge.

Prerequisites: For all classes, the Scout must read the merit badge book prior to the event. Some merit badges have additional prerequisites.

Requirements not covered: Some of the requirements cannot be completed during the class. The Scout should bring documentation of requirements not covered. If the Scout does not complete the requirements not covered and take documentation to the class, the Scout will receive a partial completion of the merit badge. Scouts who do not complete all the requirements for a particular merit badge will need to complete the badge with a registered merit badge counselor approved for that particular badge back with their unit; therefore, it is highly recommended that Scouts complete the requirements not covered before summer camp and take documentation to the show the merit badge instructor.

The merit badge instructors might tweak the prerequisites and requirements not covered, so ensure Scouts check the website in a few weeks before camp for any final changes.

Program Updates

• We have added the Cooking, Animal Science, Pottery, Chess and Insect Study Merit Badges and the Small-Boat Sailing Merit Badge class for Scouts ages 13+.

•The Pathfinder program for first-year Scouts has been updated. The class is 3 periods and covers many requirements. All troops who have Scouts in the Pathfinder program will need to send at least on adult to help with the round robin sessions. Learn more at shac.org/summer-camp#FYC

    • The ATV class for Scouts ages 14+ will be offered 3 sessions with 8 Scouts per session. See shac.org/summer-camp#ATV for mandatory prerequisites and additional items to bring.
    • The new ACE (Advanced Camper Experience) high adventure program is a half-day program designed for older Scouts (ages 14+). The youth in the program plan their own activities. Activities typically include high-ropes course, zipline, shooting sports, mountain biking, Dutch oven cooking, boating and aquatics activities. Scouts can register for a half-day or full day.

    Super Troop

If you have a Scout who cannot attend summer camp with your troop or know a Scout who wants to attend a second week of camp, encourage them to attend Super Troop. Super troop is a temporary troop made up of Scouts from around the council. Super Troop is staffed by experienced volunteer Scouters.

Super Troop is being held July 2-7 and July 9-14, 2023. Parents can register their own Scout. Learn more at shac.org/super-troop

    Friendly Reminders

It's time to start working on paperwork:

    • Medical Forms: Make sure all participants are completing the medical forms and that their physicals have been completed in the past year.

    • Background Checks: Every adult who will be at camp needs to complete a background check (Adult in Camp Compliance form) at least 2 weeks before camp.

    SHAC Corps  |  May 19-21, 2023

    We need your help!
S.H.A.C. (Scouts Helping at Camp) Corps is an opportunity for units to give back to camp in the form of a day of service. The Order of the Arrow (OA) is leading this opportunity, but this service project is open to all adults and youth in troops, crews and ships.

Service projects will include setting up for summer camp (e.g., tents) and could also include camp maintenance, creating trails, and developing program areas. Letters will be given to youth who need school service hours. The OA is providing lunch to participants.
