Phoenix District Webelos Woods

Sept. 23-25| Tellepsen Scout Camp

Webelos Woods is a campout designed to introduce 4th and 5th grade Webelos Scouts to the many outdoor adventures of Scouting. This awesome weekend event includes patrol-method camping and Scouting activities.

Phoenix District Troops will be on hand to host activities and campers. Troops should email phoenixdistrictprograms@gmail.com to coordinate their plans.

Rocket Day/Cub Scout Adventure Day

Saturday, Oct. 29 | 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. | Location TBD

SAVE THE DATE for Cub Scout Adventure Day - an action-packed day for Cub Scouts. Cub Scouts will enjoy a day of fun games, crafts, archery, activities and more.

Cub Scouts who join this year will receive a rocket that they can design, build, and launch at Cub Scout Adventure Day. New Scouts can attend any Rocket Day event in the council that fits their schedule.

Youth in kindergarten through fifth grade who are interested in joining Scouting may also attend.

Returning Scouts and families are also invited to attend Adventure Day and can bring rockets from previous years to launch again.

Fall Recruiting

It's Fall recruiting season!  If you haven't already, now is the time to contact your elementary schools to ask about having a table at Meet The Teacher and Open House, setting up scout talks, and setting up your signup nights. If you need help with your scout talks, signup nights, or ordering flyers and peer-to-peer cards, please contact your district membership chair, Rachael Hutchinson

Packs can pick up Recruiting Supplies at the Aug. 11 Roundtable.


We want to reach out to each potential Scout and their family with a personal invitation to join Scouting, where they will learn positive values, new skills and have fun with friends. Fall is a great time to focus on recruiting new families to the fun and adventure of Cub Scouting. TROOP OPEN HOUSES
Troops 1811 and 1812 are hosting a free Bike Rodeo on Saturday, Aug. 6 (9-11 a.m.) at Klein ISD Police Department (7404 Louetta Rd.). Cub Scouts should bring your own bike and helmet and joni the fun for safety checks, safety tips, skill building and obstacle course. RSVP to Troop1811@att.net or ScoutsBSA1812G@gmail.com

Troops 440 and 444 are hosing an ice cream social for Webelos and AOL Scouts on Monday, Aug. 15 (7 p.m.) at Kinsmen Lutheran Church. Visit a troop meeting, see Scouts BSA cooking skills and finish with ice cream.

The Order of the Arrow is the national honor society of the Boy Scouts of America and recognizes Scouts and Scouters who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.
OA chapter meetings provide youth Arrowmen an opportunity to develop a plan to support units in the district, promote upcoming events, participate in ceremony team preparation and regalia building, learn leadership skills and have fun.

TRAINING

Every Scout deserves a trained leader. Every leader deserves to be trained. The council offers a variety of training courses for all levels of leaders in all Scouting program. Scouters can attend training in any district. 

Den Chief Training
Saturday, Aug. 6 | 9 a.m. - Noon | Troop 1323 Hut (5927 Louetta Road)

Den Chief Training is basic training for Scouts in Troops interested in becoming den chiefs for a Cub Scout den, and for adult leaders who wish to know more about this vital position. This course will be offered in a classroom setting.

FALL TRAINING: BALOO & IOLS
Nov. 19-20 | Spring Creek Park

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is the Cub Scout leader training required for any Cub Scout Den or Pack outdoor event, including Pack Camping overnighters and Webelos Den overnighters. The course consists of an online component, and a practical, hands-on component presented during the overnight camping training weekend.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) provides adult leaders the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors and help teach basic Scout skills required to reach First Class rank. The overnight camping training weekend encompasses a weekend. It is required for a Scoutmaster or ASM to be fully trained.

We are always seeking out experienced trained leaders who would like to pass on their wisdom to other Scouters, or would like to serve in some way to help us out at our Training Events. If you’d like to be a Trainer, Quartermaster or Camp Medical Officer, please contact Kevin Renfro, Phoenix District Training Chair

Council Training

A cornerstone of the Scout programs is training.Training courses are conducted by districts and some by the Sam Houston Area Council. Trainings include First Aid, Climbing, Shooting, BALOO, IOLS and Position Specific Training.

Council Training Calendar

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed six-day council-level program designed to provide Scouts in troops, crews, and ships with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and other situations demanding leadership of self and others. The next course is scheduled for Dec. 26-31. Courses are held in December and June. Learn more at www.shac.org/nylt.

Scouts who have taken NYLT can apply to serve on staff. If you know a Scout who has completed NYLT and is highly motivated and passionate about Scouting, encourage them to considered serving on staff for the winter camp NYTL courses. Interviews are being conducted on August 13, 2022. Learn more and sign up for an interview at https://shac.org/nylt#staff.

Leave No Trace Trainer (September 16-18) is a 16-hour, overnight course for individuals, ages 14 and up who wish to guide units in developing a culture that effectively demonstrates responsible outdoor choices that reduce impacts of Scouting activities. Leave No Trace Trainers, outdoor ethics guides, and outdoor ethics advisors are the backbone of Scouting’s outdoor ethics program, providing instruction to individuals and units wishing to adopt cutting-edge outdoor ethics into their unit programs. The training is being held at Camp Brosig in Sealy, TX. Learn more and register at www.shac.org/training-schedule#lnt.

Wood Badge (October 7-9 and 22-23) is the Boy Scouts of America's ultimate leadership training designed to meet the advanced leadership needs of Scouters in all aspects of the BSA. It is a fun, energetic, and inspiring course guaranteed to infuse your unit with fun and meaning – all designed to fulfill the mission of the BSA, and ensure our youth is getting everything they are promised from the program. Reflecting the best of nearly a century of Scouting experience, Wood Badge draws upon the most current leadership models used by corporate America, academic circles, and successful organizations throughout the country. Participants can expect to develop skills in many areas, including leadership theory, team building, problem-solving, communication, project planning, and more. These skills can be taken back to packs, troops, crews, and ships to help leaders guide youth in dynamic Scouting programs. News from ERM

Hello Scouters!  

Please note that SHAC has issued a new update on Covid Guidelines for scouting. This is Communication #16. The State and CDC continue to be the guide for our activities with SHAC giving us some specific guidelines that apply to scouting activities.

Please Note that Districts are no longer required to submit their activity plans to the Council ERM Committee. You should, however, continue to have the District ERM review your plans for District activities.

In addition, utilizing he Covid Pre-Event medical checklist is recommended. The forms are not required to be turned in at Council Camp activities.

Safety continues to be a guiding practice to allow all events to be conducted with scouter and adults in a safe and positive manner. Safety is everyones responsibility.

CAMPING & OUTDOORS

Phoenix District Cookbook

To all the awesome Quartermasters, Chefs, cooks, scouts, moms and dads, it is time to begin to collect camping recipes for our Phoenix District Cookbook. Camping Chair Clara Martin will provide a submission form that can be shared with your den, troop, unit, pack, etc. This will list the categories for the cookbook. Please share this form with your scouters and provide your recipes to be shared across our District.

Please send Camping Chair Clara Martin any feedback regarding your camping locations. This will begin to build a resource for all units in our area.
