BSA Honor Medal and Medal of Merit

Scout Akshay Kapur and Scout Cooper Fairman recognized and reacted when fellow trek participants from a capsized canoe needed rescue assistance.  The trek consisted of three canoes with three persons in each. One canoe capsized in rough weather. Kupar’s canoe went to assist and tow the capsized canoe to shore. Cooper’s canoe sought a haven for its victims by going to shore in adverse making ready a final rescue site for those that had ended up in the cold water.  Speed was imperative as hypothermia’s effect was increasing.

Kupar canoe tow was only about ¼ mile, but very difficult due to the choppy conditions and drag of the capsized canoe. Greatly contributing to the recovery was Cooper’s group making a safe clearing to set up tents, building a fire, and preparing warm food.

Once ashore, others joined to remove the victims’ wet clothing, put them into warm clothes and shelter, and eventually fed them with warm food.

For their actions, Akshay Kapur received the Honor Medal and Cooper Fairman received the Medal of Merit. To learn more about these Scouts please visit here.
