$45 Per Person
10 spots left!!!

Join renowned Anthropologist, Peter Blystone; Homolovi Park Ranger, Kenn Evan and VVAC's Executive Director, Monica Buckle for an excursion to Homolovi. A Hopi word meaning “Place of the Little Hills”. Homolovi is an important Ancestral Hopi village site. Constructed late, and short-lived in the Northern Arizona Pueblo world, this series of seven villages represents the flowering of large village architecture, farming, trade, and the new Katsina religion. Between 1260 and 1400 these Pueblos thrived along the Little Colorado River.

We begin our visit at the modern Homolovi State Park Visitors Center before driving to Homolovi II, the largest of the Pueblos, with 1200 rooms and ceremonial kivas. A paved walking trail with benches winds through the site. After Homolovi you have the option to join us for lunch at The Turquoise Room restaurant at La Posada in Winslow.

The Homolovi tour will require walking and long periods of standing. Please wear comfortable walking/hiking shoes, hiking stick if needed, hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and water/Gatorade.

Peter Blystone is a documentary filmmaker and cultural travel-explorer. He attended film school in Santa Fe, N.M. and earned an M.A. in Anthropology from Northern Arizona University. Peter has been a longstanding participant in the American Rock Art Research Association, and a documentary producer for the Museum of Northern Arizona, and contract archaeology companies in Arizona. Discover Hopi Textiles with Master Weaver Ahkima Honyumptewa

Saturday, May the 20th at 11:00am

In-person at VVAC
Join us for Ahkima Honyumptewa's highly anticipated presentation! Ahkima will discuss his art of weaving and continuing a time honored tradition. He will also speak about his process of replicating an Ancestral Hopi textile from VVAC’s Dyck Cliff Dwelling Collection. Ahkima’s replica weaving will be on view in the museum’s Textile Gallery.

“My name is Ahkima Honyumptewa of the rattlesnake clan, from the village of paaqavi, on the Hopi reservation. I am a weaver, painter, farmer and architect. I’m a student of philosophy and Chinese martial arts. These are some of the many attributes I try to develop. I have been weaving since the end of 2007. It was by chance that I started weaving. I didn't care to do it until they offered me a spot in a class they were having at the paaqavi community center. It just so happened that one of my uncles from hotevilla was teaching the class, so I joined. After a couple of days, I picked it up quick. It was easy for me. That's how I got started doing textiles." AHKIMA

Members Hike to Red Tank Draw
Guided by, Richard McGaugh
Monday, May the 22nd: 10:00am until about 1:00pm

Limit of 12 participants

Red Tank Draw is a short walk down into Rarick Canyon. We will see many petroglyph images. Some of the more spectacular are on the East side of the draw, where we will be walking over roughly 80 feet of river rock.

Meet at 10:00am at the junction of Highway 17 and 179, this would be the Southeast side of the intersection and caravan to the trailhead. There is ample parking right off the 618-forest road where we will meet. High clearance vehicles such as an SUV will get closer to the trailhead, the group might have to consolidate into that type of vehicle for the last ½ mile.

Bring snacks or lunch, water, hiking sticks, a hat and sunscreen. There will be a short walk-through desert vegetation.

The hike leader is Richard McGaugh who is from a fourth-generation Verde Valley family and has spent his time studying and exploring Central and Northern Arizona. Richard is a VVAC Docent and Volunteer. He is also a VIP Interpretative Ranger at Walnut Canyon National Monument and Wupatki/Sunset Crater National Monuments. Richard also serves as a Docent at the Museum of Northern Arizona.

This hike is exclusive to VVAC members. Advance registration is required. Please register here:
