April 12-14 and April 26-28, 2019
Tellepsen Scout Camp (Navasota) and Galveston

Powder Horn is an action-packed, hands–on, six–day course. Leaders from all Scouting programs, age 14 and older, are eligible to attend; and there are no restrictions on attending the course a second time.

Powder Horn is designed to introduce and expose Venturing, Sea Scout, Varsity and Boy Scout adult and youth leaders to activities and resources necessary to manage a successful outdoor or high adventure unit–level program. It is based on the eight core requirements and eighteen electives of the Venturing Ranger program.

Powder Horn is a fun introduction to skills but does not train you to be an expert, or even to be self–sufficient in any aspect of outdoor skills. Units will still need to find knowledgeable, trained, and certified individuals to provide a safe and exciting outdoor high adventure program, but we will show you how to do this.

Powder Horn objectives:

  • Exposes participants to high adventure ACTIVITIES for older youth in Troops, Crews, Ships.
  • Provides an introduction to the RESOURCES and CONSULTANTS available to successfully lead Scouting units through a program of high adventure.
  • Helps leaders feel comfortable offering challenging outdoor activities, while balancing fun with safety, health and responsibility.

Registration limited to total of 48 participants.

Participant Qualifications

  • Be a registered adult or a registered Boy Scout, Venturing Scout or Sea Scout who is at least 14 years old. • Youth must have completed the required leadership training for the unit in which they are registered (Introduction to Leadership Skills or National Youth Leadership Training).
  • Adults must be trained for their position.
