We were Prepared is a first-hand account of the Texas City Disaster of 1947, the deadliest industrial accident in American history. The resulting devastation continued for days, caused by a ship explosion of 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate.

Frank's story paints a vivid picture of the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts who responded heroically, braving fumes and dodging hot shrapnel from the continually-exploding fuel storage tanks. Scouts as young as twelve years old were involved in rescue efforts.

This book is based upon interviews from Scouts and Scouters who answered the call to duty, official reports, media articles, and Frank's own personal experience. We Were Prepared is intended to be an inspiration for Scouts to always be prepared to render aid, just as we were back in 1947.

Frank Urbanic was a 13 year old Scout. He worked in the Fort Crockett Hospital in Galveston, carrying bed pans, blankets, and dead bodies.

Born and reared in Galveston, Frank graduated from Texas A&M with a bachelor of science in aeronautical engineering. He served 20 years in the USAF as an instructor pilot, fighter pilot, R&D program manager, and aide-de-camp. Frank flew the A-1 Skyraider in Vietnam and completed 248 combat missions. He currently runs a consulting company to help small businesses market themselves to the U.S. Department of Defense.
